ROVE McManus has described his “two wonderful girls”, Tasma Walton and Belinda Emmett, as the highlights of the past decade.

The former TV host, who married actor Walton in June, lost Emmett to breast cancer in 2006 just 18 months after they wed.

“No matter how bad it got, there was always a positive somewhere, a moment where you could laugh,” he said of Emmett’s brave battle against the disease. “Otherwise you fall into a hole. I tried that, and it didn’t work. I came out.” His decade highlights are revealed in Who magazine’s Goodbye to the Noughties special that is released today as part of its Best & Worst of 2009 issue.

Rove has finished, for good. The Logie Award winning hit talk show wrapped up for the final time on Sunday Night, with no prior warning. Rumours are now swirling on what he will do next, we of course will keep you updated. For 10 years of entertaining us, we thank him and the entire team.

Take a look in case you missed it, the final moments from Rove.

Below is the official announcement from Roving Enterprises and Network Ten.

Rove McManus announced on-air this evening that his long running talk show, ROVE, would be coming to an end, with tonight’s episode being his last after a record breaking ten year run.

“It was a difficult call to make but after ten years it felt like time to step away from the show and take a break to properly reflect on what I want to do next as a performer.

Rove’s decision came off the back of discussions with TEN over the last couple of weeks.

“The relationship with David Mott and the team at TEN has given us the space to make a show that we are extremely proud of over the last ten years, it is more opportunity than most will ever get. I thank them for their support and hope they have enjoyed the ride as much as I have.”

The strong relationship between Roving Enterprises and TEN will continue to grow with The 7PM Project and Before The Game, both on TEN through 2010.

Network Ten, chief programming office David Mott said, “ROVE has been a big part of the TV landscape and more personally the TEN stable over the years.”

“Our warm thanks and congratulations go to the crew, the cast, executive producer Craig Campbell and of course Rove McManus himself for making a show that’s entertained us and made us laugh week in week out.

“The end of ROVE on TEN does not mark the end of Rove and TEN, a relationship that spans a decade is harder than this to switch off.”

Rove decided to hold off on announcing this decision until tonight so that the audience at home could hear the news from him first. He also wanted to avoid any fuss leading into the finale so that he could focus on the show.

“We only did our tenth anniversary show a few weeks ago, you can only have one flashback episode a year – that’s the law”

“I didn’t want tonight’s episode to feel like the end, I have closed a chapter and after I recover from the wrap party I will work out what’s next. If it is half as rewarding as the last ten years I will be rapt.”

Sydney Morning Herald:

Entertainer Rove McManus is walking away from his self-titled variety television show after three gold Logies and a decade on air.

McManus made the surprise announcement at the beginning of Sunday night’s episode of Rove. “I know we’ve made jokes about this on the show before where I’ve just gone, ‘Oh, I’m leaving’, and it’s was like, ‘Oh, I’m going to come back after the break’. Not this time.

The Age:

At the close of last night’s show McManus said it was not a decision he had taken lightly and that it “just seems like the right thing to do”. “Let me say thank you to everybody who makes this show possible,” he said, adding that the show members were like family to him. “And also to the families it was not my idea to do the weekends.” In a statement he said he did not want last night’s show to mark the end. “I’ve closed a chapter and after I recover from the wrap party I will work out what’s next,” he said.

TV Tonight: (Gallery Retrospective)

[...]He brought with him his mates Peter Helliar, Corinne Grant and Dave Callan. But Nine wanted the fresh-faced host to abandon his pals on air and tried to offer him game shows. As Campbell recently told TV Tonight, “They had weddings and parties, all these ‘great’ formats they wanted Rove to host. He just kept going ‘No not me, no not me.’ To his credit he kept saying ‘Thanks for the offers but it’s not what I want to do, I’m not here to take the money.’”

If you wish to send a goodbye message, the mailing address for Roving Enterprises is below.

RUMOURS about the future of Rove McManus at Channel 10 were flying again yesterday after a tip-off that staff on his TV show were told this week to look for alternative work next year.

Ten’s publicity department later denied production staff were advised to look elsewhere for jobs.

“We have checked with Roving (Enterprises) and no such discussion was had. As for what changes may or may not be made with Rove for 2010, this will be announced on the show this Sunday, stay tuned.”

Sunday night’s program is the final for the year.

McManus was last Friday spotted dining with Merrick Watts and Peter Helliar in Sydney, prompting talk that he might return to radio in 2010.

On the same day, Watts’ longtime radio partner Tim Ross ended his radio gig with Nova.

TV talk-show host Rove McManus was dumped in a pool of a slime as he took out the top prize at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards for the second year in a row.

The perennial kids’ champion Rove descended from a slippery slide into a slime pool as he was announced the ‘fave aussie’, dragging in Australian Idol host Andrew Gunsberg with him.

He beat the likes of Bindi Irwin, Hugh Jackman and Jessica Mauboy for the title.

It was certainly McManus’ night.

He earlier beat Gunsberg in the famed burp off competition, and took out fave TV star.

As he went up to accept his award McManus was mobbed by children grabbing him in the audience.

“I need to tell you something, someone touched my bum,” McManus laughed on stage.

“… And that’s very inappropriate.”

It started earlier than usual this year.

ROVE McManus is going to live life on his terms and he doesn’t give a hoot what TV executives, the media, or even you think about it.

It’s an “I’ll do it my way” attitude that’s won him a legion of fans, a thriving production company and a successful TV career for 10 years.

Another example of that “my way” spirit is McManus’s decision to delay the return of Rove in 2010 until April/May. The 2009 season finale is on November 15, so the 35-year-old will have nearly a six-month break.Rove has had its ups and downs. It peaked at 1.54 million viewers nationally in June but has dropped to about 880,000 in recent weeks after losing Dave Hughes and Carrie Bickmore and being shunted back into a 9.30pm timeslot. The show hardly featured in Ten’s 2010 program launch last week. Weekend rumours had it getting a major revamp for next year, perhaps into a Hey Hey it’s Saturday-style format.

A Ten spokesperson says: “Rove will be back in 2010.”

“With the 7PM Project, it’s a new show and I’m assuming it will need time to find its feet as a program and a format and hopefully people will give it that time,” McManus says.

“This show (Rove) is my love and my passion and it’s always what I’ve wanted to do. If everything else fell down, as long as I still get to do this thing I love the most then I’m happy.

“We have that (a connection with the audience) at the moment and I think that’s where my enthusiasm is coming from.

“When your personal life is in a good place it helps with your professional life as well.

“People say to me, ‘do you still have plans to go to the States?’ and (the answer is) no, because I’m happy with what I’m doing here.

“It’s nice to enjoy the ride, which I haven’t always been able to do.”

Next Sunday the 8th November, Rove will be joined by Benji and Joel Madden (Good Charlotte), Hamish & Andy and Gossip will perform ‘Love Long Distance’.

Dennis Hopper was originally scheduled to appear but has revealed he is battling prostate cancer and has canceled his Australian tour.

Then on 15th November, the final episode of 2009 will feature Sam Worthington, Hamish & Andy and Powderfinger will perform ‘All of the Dreamers’.

Still no word on whether or not Rove intends on returning early 2010 or midway through the year as rumoured.

RoveFeed had a chance to interview Rove, in association with RoveOnline, this is the third installment of the interview, focusing on the move to Sunday Nights in 2007.

I asked him how did the move get brought to his attention and what his reaction was.

It was pretty much, uh, the first option, which was – this is what we think. What do you guys think? No one will see it coming, it will be, a bit of a gamble but we will stick with it, which is what Ten do very well, to say look this is what we are planning on doing, we’ll stand by you and we are not expecting too much in the early goings.

He continued by explaining the unexpected consequences of the move that made him happy not having to interview certain reality stars anymore.

[...] we think its just a nice way to reset, and they were looking at having, a live night because thats not what everyone else had at the time, so going straight through from think at the time, from Biggest Loser to Big Brother into us, so it was just live from start to finish and to be honest for me it was I didn’t have to have Big Brother housemates on anymore [laughs] and I sort of say that as a bit of a joke but seriously I was over it by that stage and and it obviously meant there was no point because someone had just been evicted before us and interviewed by Gretel, and so you wouldn’t have then had last weeks evictee on your show afterwards because it was old news, so it just meant, negated it all together and I was really happy with all that.

In the next installment of the interview we focus on the constant timeslot changes.
