During a television appearance on Rove McManus’ comedy program last year, Rudd opted for Clinton when asked “Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama?” But Rudd now says he was only suggesting that he thought that the New York senator was going to win the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

“When you’re doing, I think it was a John Denton interview,” he said, at which stage he was interrupted by reporters and reminded it had been Rove’s show. “It was all a blur,” Rudd replied. “As I remember it, it was all a bit of a blur.

“(It was) all about who was in my opinion was going to win at that stage, and you don’t punt.”

The McManus/Denton gaffe is reminiscent of an episode when Beazley confused McManus’ name with that of White House strategist Karl Rove on the morning of the funeral of McManus’s wife, Belinda Emmett. For the record the ABC’s Andrew Denton, not John, hosts a regular talk show program.

ROVE McManus is angry with women’s magazines, accusing them of falsifying details of his romance with actor Tasma Walton.

A month after Woman’s Day published an article under the headline, “Rove and Tasma Shock Baby News”, McManus said the glossy gossip magazines fabricated stories about him.

“The magazines seem to be doing a wonderful job of . . . just making up whatever the hell they want,” McManus said. He quipped he could soon be accused of being pregnant. “My hope (is) to be the first man in history to be rumoured by a magazine to have a baby bump. It’s only February, so who knows?”

McManus, whose wife died in November 2006, has been seeing Walton since late last year. The pair holidayed in Europe together during the summer. The Woman’s Day article appeared not long before January 29 — the day that would have marked the third anniversary of McManus’s wedding to Emmett. In the article, a “friend” of Walton’s claimed: “Tasma and Rove are head over heels in love and feel it’s not too early to take the next step in their relationship.”

Woman’s Day editorial director Louisa Hatfield claimed to be “stressed” by McManus’s criticism of the magazines, particularly hers. “We love Rove, our readers love Rove and we are stressed that he is upset with us,” Hatfield said, claiming McManus’s latest tirade stemmed from an article set to appear in the magazine this week. – Herald Sun

Comment: I would hardly call making some quips and defending himself going on a ‘angry tirade’.

Rove is gearing up to return to TV next month, and the man behind the show will play three nights in the cavernous Town Hall for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. But first he’s stepping on stage tonight to help out a friend. Live Adrian is a benefit gig for Adrian Calear — one of the shining lights of Melbourne comedy — with McManus, Spicks and Specks stars Adam Hills and Alan Brough, Tripod, Peter Helliar, Charlie Pickering, Dave Callan and Michael Chamberlin just some of the big names on the bill.

McManus is just back from a holiday in the UK and has “no idea” what he will say tonight. His self-titled festival show is in the largest room of the Town Hall.

Rove on TV and Comedy…

“TV keeps me off the comedy scene and it is when I bump into people like Adrian that I miss the live comedy world,” he said. “He also walks with a cane which I am kind of jealous of; you always look more interesting with a cane.”
