Special Comment: Reporting the Reporters

October 25th, 2007 · 2 Comments

On my last post I said I would not cover the Tasma/Rove story, well technically I am not. I am going to cover how the story is being reported (and mistreated) by the mainstream media.

250_7401071105cov_white.jpg First of all the most disturbing thing I have seen today on The Herald Sun and now on Who Magazine’s website is them asking readers to voice their opinions on whether it is too soon for Rove to have another relationship. First of all this is a disgusting question to ask in the first place, where do these “journalists” get off asking anonymous readers whether they think he should be dating anyone yet? Since when do people think they have any right to comment on whether someone wants to have a relationship following the very sad death of their partner?

Rove may be a public figure but that does not mean something as personal as this situation should be paraded around with photos of Tasma moving in allegedly going for over $30,000? Or tabloid papers and magazines asking readers whether they think someone should have a relationship after the death of their partner? Is this what the Australian media has become? A sick game of exploiting someone’s personal life and their grieving process and then exploiting their attempts to move on with their life?

I expect this from Who Magazine but a major metropolitian newspaper such as The Herald Sun should have more respect for its readers and its reputation. I think it is a sad time in our media when newspapers such as The Herald Sun stoop to tacky tabloid magazine material on their website and even worse posters on their site “expressing their opinion” about something that’s frankly no concern or business of theirs in the first place.
