Roving in Times Square

July 21st, 2007 · No Comments

Perth Now reveals more about Rove’s trip to the United States.

ROVE McManus is looking forward. His Sunday night show is from New York, but he remains coy on whether a career in the US beckons.

McManus has spent the past few days escaping eastern Australia’s cold snap and getting a taste of everything on offer in the balmy Big Apple.

“That’s how you really defrost,” he said from Times Square. I really like that idea. The whole birds flying south for the winter thing, they’ve got the right idea.” McManus will be in the US when the ABC’s Australian Story program tomorrow night screens an emotional episode on his late wife, Belinda Emmett, who lost her battle with cancer in November.

He says, “I’m not going to talk about that” when asked about the program. It features a candid video diary that Emmett kept over a number of years to document her experiences and promises to offer a touching insight into her humour and personality.

McManus hasn’t ruled out a move to the US and clearly likes the place, even running down the heart of frenetic Times Square with a sign as big as himself saying “I Rove NY”. “Well, I’m certainly not ruling it out,” he said of a relocation to the US. “There’s nothing official on the cards as yet. This is certainly a nice way of coming over and seeing how everything works in the States, but the show is going really well back home. We’re really enjoying it and the new time slot has worked very well for us.”

McManus admits he would be very foolish to give all of that up “because I love it so much”. He doesn’t want to move to the US just for the sake of it, but says that if something were to come up, he would consider it. “You know, the pay packet that is in US dollars isn’t a bad thing,” he said. “But I wouldn’t just turn my back on the country and the show that’s made me what I am now.”

“The New York show tonight is being filmed right in the guts of Times Square. All I brought over is my desk and the couch, so our backdrop, our set, will quite literally be Times Square, New York City.” The star-spangled banner show in New York features a stellar line-up of comedians and actors, including Adam Sandler, Kevin James and Janeane Garofalo, as well as music by Australian Ben Lee. A Los Angeles show next Sunday boasts Claire Danes, Michael Vartan, Radha Mitchell and Good Charlotte.
